Think about shapes and shades

When we stroll around a town, things that we see are vivid and full of colors. The relationships between the use and gratification of colors in our day-to-day activities may be an interesting topic, so that we can further pursue observational studies on colors. There, you can start making a collection based on colors, for example. However, it is also important to focus on shapes and shades of the objects under study.
In order to shift our focus to the shapes and shades, try an experiment to see things in black-and-white (monochrome).

Go out to the field and take 2 pictures:

This practice requires a function (or its equivalent) to change the color mode of photos.

  1. First, take a picture of a colorful object, then,
  2. take a picture of an object with a distinctive form or shape.
  3. Then, convert the color mode of the pictures to a black-and-white (monochrome) mode.

It may be difficult to check on the screen when you practice with mobile phones, but try to think whether or not things look differently after you changed the color mode. What are the things you begin to notice? What are the things you tend to lose focus on?
